The “Cold Start” Symphony
That louder engine sound right after you start the car? Totally normal. When temperatures drop, oil thickens slightly and takes a moment to circulate fully. During that warm-up period, engines can sound rougher or louder than usual. Once the engine warms up, things usually quiet right down.
You might also notice a brief squeal when you first pull away. Belts can stiffen in the cold and make a quick protest before settling in. If it disappears within a minute or two, it’s usually just winter doing its thing.
Pops, Ticks, and Light Clicking
Ever hear a popping or ticking sound after parking? That’s your exhaust system cooling down and contracting after being warmed up. In cold weather, metal expands and contracts more noticeably, so these sounds can be more pronounced—but they’re completely normal.
Light ticking from the engine area during warm-up can also fall into the “no big deal” category, especially if it fades as the engine reaches operating temperature.
When It’s Worth a Conversation
Some sounds deserve a closer look—not because they’re an emergency, but because catching them early keeps small issues from becoming bigger ones.
Grinding when braking, for example, isn’t something to ignore, cold weather or not. A loud, persistent squeal that doesn’t go away after warm-up is another sign it’s time to check in. And if you hear knocking, clunking, or anything that suddenly feels new or off, trust your instincts.
